We ordered Chinese food as we gathered as family
Three generations getting closer to becoming two
I sat at the table with her, opening fortune cookies, and laughing
I wish I remembered what they said but the message was clear –
Life repeats itself
And life gives rise to laughter
As we read fortune after fortune and kept finding repeats,
We filled our souls with laughter amidst the sadness
Amidst the fear I am sure was there,
Hiding underneath the surface of what they told a twelve year old
Hiding underneath the reality that this would be the last meal shared
Life repeats itself and there is always laughter
